An Taisce's GLOBE Ireland - Air Quality Campaign

25th Sep 2025

3rd Class were delighted to welcome Orlaith and Sorcha to their class today. They are facilitators for GLOBE Ireland's Air Quality Campaign, a science and education programme that is part of An Taisce and funded by the EPA.

This is a nationwide initiative focused on monitoring nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) levels in the air around schools.

As part of the project, the class received special air quality monitoring tubes to help gather real data about local air pollution.

After learning about air pollution—what it is, where it comes from, and how it affects our health—the pupils carefully discussed and selected the most suitable locations around the school to place the tubes.

Following their investigation, they decided on three strategic spots:

  • In the Tree Yard

  • The Bike Yard

  • The Grattan Crescent side of the New Surface Yard

These areas were chosen to capture different levels of exposure to traffic and environmental conditions. The tubes will remain in place for four weeks, after which they’ll be collected and analysed to give us a better understanding of local air quality.

This hands-on project is a fantastic way to engage pupils in real-world science and environmental awareness, encouraging them to think critically about the world around them.
